
Minors
Africana Studies Minor
The minor in Africana studies consists of a minimum of 18 units in Africana Studies, of which 12 units must be upper division, to include:
- AFRAS 101 - Introduction to Africana Studies: Social and Behavioral Sciences Units: 3
- Three additional units selected from the courses for preparation for the major
- AFRAS 327 - Critical Theories in Africana Studies Units: 3
- Three units selected from each of the three areas of the major
Courses in the minor may not be counted toward the major, but may be used to satisfy preparation for the major and general education requirements, if applicable. A minimum of six upper division units must be completed in residence at San Diego State University.
African Studies Minor
Additionally a minor in African studies is offered through Interdisciplinary Studies, but advising is done through our department.
The minor in African Studies consists of a minimum of 15 upper division units selected from:
- AFRAS 423 - Black Nationalism Units: 3
- AFRAS 465 - Africa in Literature and Film Units: 3 (also listed as FRENC 465)
- AFRAS 466 - Afrofuturism Units: 3
- AFRAS 470 - Comparative History: Afro-American and African Heritage Units: 3
- AFRAS 472 - African Enslavement Units: 3
- AFRAS 473 - Women in Africa Units: 3
- AFRAS 485 - Blacks in the Arts Units: 3
- AFRAS 520 - African Civilization I Units: 3
- AFRAS 521 - African Civilization II Units: 3
- AFRAS 542 - Afrocentricity Units: 3
- POL S 364 - Political Change in Modern Africa Units: 3
- REL S 328 - Islam (B) Units: 3
Courses in the minor may not be counted toward the major in Africana studies, humanities, political science, or religious studies, but may be used to satisfy preparation for the major and general education requirements, if applicable. A minimum of six upper division units must be completed in residence at San Diego State University.
