
Major in Africana Studies
The Africana studies major is an impacted program. In order to be admitted to the Africana studies major, students must meet the following criteria:
a. Complete preparation for the major
b. Complete a minimum of 60 transferable semester units
c. Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0
To complete the major, students must fulfill the degree requirements for the major described in the catalog in effect at the time they are accepted into the premajor at SDSU (assuming continuous enrollment).

- AFRAS 101 - Introduction to Africana Studies: Social and Behavioral Sciences Units: 3
- AFRAS 170A - Afro-American History to 1865 Units: 3
- 3 units selected from:
- AFRAS 170B - Afro-American History from 1865 to Present Units: 3

Major (27-30 units)
A minimum of 27-30 upper division units to include:
- AFRAS 327 - Critical Theories in Africana Studies Units: 3
- AFRAS 490 - Senior Seminar Units: 3
- AFRAS 500 - Research Methods Units: 3
18 Units Selected from the Focal Areas:
12-15 units selected from one of the following focal areas (African American Studies, African Studies, or Diaspora Studies) and three units from each of the remaining two focal areas. Up to six units, with appropriate content, of 496 and 499 in any combination may be applied to a focus with the approval of the department chair. With the exception of AFRAS 485, no course may be used to satisfy more than one area of focus.
